The Ramsgate School

Demolition project background

DDS Demolition were contracted by Wates Construction to undertake the complete asbestos removal, strip out and demolition at their Ramsgate School site in Ramsgate, Kent. The area of the site covered thirty five thousand square metres and demolition incorporated structures of varying construction and magnitude. The demolition works included the demolition of a three-storey building, two two-storey buildings and the other single storey buildings on the site. The main buildings were constructed with steel frame and reinforced concrete slabs, the walls were glazed with solid panels and the roof is expected to be timber lattice with bituminous felt. The nature of the works required vigilance and Health and Safety was at the forefront throughout the project.

The contract included extensive asbestos removal works, the majority of which was non-notifiable and carried out by our specialist trained team. Hand held tools were used to remove the asbestos and access was provided in the form of a purpose built manriding platform including safety harnesses with lanyards. Asbestos materials were damped down with water, kept in one piece and carried by hand to the loading point. Operatives are highly skilled and attend regular asbestos awareness courses to update their knowledge; they understand their duties and the risks associated with hazardous articles. The structural integrity of the buildings were sustained at all times including at the close of each shift and all plant was made completely secure on departure.

Although the area of the site itself was sizeable the entrance was via narrow local roads with vehicles parking on both pavements. This impediment was taken into account within the traffic management plan and the safety and welfare of both operatives and public was given due care and consideration. The surrounding area was predominately residential and this was also considered, noise minimising plant was used where practically possible and dust suppression methods employed. The magnitude of the site did not obstruct DDS from completing the contract on programme and within budget.
