Snodland Paper Mill, Ream and Pallet Store

Demolition project background

DDS Demolition undertook phase four of a consolidation scheme extending over two years for Smurfit Kappa Townsend Hook, at their Paper Mill in Snodland Kent. This phase involved the complete demolition of the Ream and Pallet store, located less than a metre away from the Maidstone to London railway line. The structures were constructed of timber, brick, concrete and steelwork; over ninety eight percent of which underwent recycling and further processing via our sister company TW Services.

The sensitivity of the environment in which the works were undertaken ensured the extreme caution which DDS employed. The Paper Mill was in operation through the duration of the works; therefore the services powering the mill remained live throughout, this created restrictions to the working environment such as the implications of a main water supply pipe running directly underneath the site of demolition.Network Rail authorised the shared T3 possession, which spanned twenty eight hours. The proximity of the railway line to the structure could have become problematic if not handled with the due concern and consideration it required, specifically damage to a large HV cable, which if damaged would have caused the complete reinstatement of a new rail line the entire length of Maidstone to London, incurring substantial cost and delays to Network Rail.

Considerable preparation works were undertaken predominately railway line protection works, including the strategic positioning of track protection to prevent any damage by debris should it have fallen. The security and processes on this site were governed by Network Rail, inductions, registers and site information were gathered for both the principle contractor and the higher authority providing systems of work cleared with all three contributing parties. DDS adhered to these rigorous procedures in addition to comprehensive planning; this enabled the completion of the project by the safest method whilst remaining on time and to budget with no delays or damage to Network Rails property.
