Folkestone Harbour

Demolition project background

DDS were commissioned by Folkestone Harbour Board to undertake the complete demolition of a Passenger Departure Lounge and two adjacent steel train sheds located on the pier.

The site remained a live harbour environment throughout the works and included complications involving the close proximity of an aggregate import dock, Coast Guard moorings in addition to a close liaison with the local fishing community. Due to the proximity to the sea, suitable restraint systems and methods were developed to avoid the risk of operatives, plant or debris breaching the demarcated working areas. The pier was cleared at the end of each working shift and all areas left in a safe condition; allowing the barriers removal during non working hours. The contract was programmed to proceed through the winter months and this presented hazards that may not usually have been anticipated. Extreme weather conditions had to be overcome and a working area logistics plan was produced to allow the works to be carried out in other areas during the adverse conditions. It was imperative to consider the proximity of the site to the surrounding residential area of Folkestone and the tight conservation restrictions involved with working within the historic harbour.Despite a particularly harsh winter the works were delivered on programme and within budget.
