Demolition project background

The building was generally a steel framed structure clad with corrugated asbestos cement roof sheets, brick walls and glazing. There was a basement beneath part of the building and the ground slab contained various inspection pits.


  • Establish site welfare facilities
  • Liasing with Kier Partnership Homes, confirm isolation and termination of services in the buildings
  • Remove corrugated asbestos cement roof materials
  • Soft strip building
  • Demolish structure down to ground floor slab level
  • Break out ground slab and hardstandings
  • Break out basement and batter sides of excavation
  • Break out and remove foundations to 1.5m in depth
  • Remove all demolition, rubbish and soft strip materials arising

Achievements and Successes

  • This project was due to start at a time when DDS’s resources were already stretched but agreed to undertake the contract to assist the client in meeting their own programme deadlines. Despite the shortage of resource’s, DDS effectively managed the plant and labour between site’s to deliver the contract to programme without making any compromise to our high quality, environmental and high health & safety standards.
  • This site was situated between numerous retail and residential premises, all of which sat closely to the site boundary. DDS managed to undertake the contract without affecting any of their day-to-day activities and received zero complaints.
  • Site access proved to be difficult, with only one narrow site entrance. There was restricted access between two retail premises connected at their first floor level with an advertising frame carrying the street lighting cable, thus reducing the height and size of vehicle which could access the site. This caused complexities not only with getting our own plant on site, but also with waste logistics. DDS overcame both obstacles by carefully sourcing a waste disposal company who could cater to our needs, and selecting the correct plant from our resources.
